Growth in Thought, Word and Deed
Message by Peter Shankar
Compiled by Joel So
Mr. Peter spoke about the statement above revealing many interesting ideas throughout his entire sermon. “Growth in Thought, Word and Deed” combined together is actually Spiritual Growth. All of us Christians must grow spiritually and physically. We cannot grow without maintaining this balance, or we would be thrown of course of the path which God has set for each one of us.
Our earthly body can be divided into 3 sections, mainly the Spirit, Soul and Body. Spiritual aptitude, psychological aptitude and physical aptitude are all under these sections, they all play an important part during our walk on Earth.
Prompting Pull
Of God’s <<< Spirit <<< Mind <<< Will >>> Emotions >>> Human Nature >>> of the Spirit Lower Nature
While this diagram explains the battle of tug-of-war between the prompting of God’s Spirit and The lower nature. These forces pull against our spirit, mind, will, emotions and our sinful human nature. Conflicting, decisions, emotions, thoughts all play about all these areas. Whether we choose to follow God’s Spirit or the lower nature, that’s our choice. We MUST make the right decisions in our life, sometimes we are stuck in a sticky situation and are tempted to do wrong. Whatever the problem is… Remember the prompting of God’s Spirit. If you are still not sure or have doubts on your choice… Always PRAY… Prayer is your most powerful weapon in your fight against sin.
Mr. Peter also stressed on youth’s who think they are making the right decisions but to find out eventually that they were deceived by Satan to allow the Word of God to saturate their mind, so it will wash out thoughts which oppose the Scriptures. For the more you read the Word of God, the more you will be like Jesus for you have the Word of God hidden in your heart, and don’t just memorize the Scriptures, USE it in your daily life. Utilize it to the maximum. In doing this we shall reap the abundant life God wants us to have.
Lastly he concluded with a list of areas which the youth of today struggle with:
- Self (Romans 6)
- Dating (James 1:13-15)
- Clothes (Philipians 4:19)
- Money (Matthew 6:19-21)(Malachi 3:10-11)
- Knowledge (Collosians 2:8)
- Friends (Matthew 5:11-12)(1 Peter 3:10-14)
- Music (Collosians 3:16-17)
- Future (Hebrews 12:1-4)
- Health (2 Timothy 2:3-4)
- Reputation (1 Cor 8:4-13)(James 1:1-4)
- Time (Romans 14:16-23)
That concludes Mr. Peter’s sermon for that day.

Being A Malaysian Christian
Article by Ian Lam
This is quite an interesting topic that I have to give quite some thought before writing about it. To start of, maybe the definitions of ‘Malaysian’ and ‘Christian’ have to be properly defined. ‘Malaysian’ is someone who is a citizen on Malaysia (duh…:P). ‘Christian’ is someone who knows and believes in the Risen Savior, Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of the world and now sits at God the Father’s right hand after his resurrection. A Christian has also the Holy Spirit, the third person in the Triune Godhead, who is actively at work in sanctifying the believer’s life to be more like Christ. A Christian is also committed to his fellow believers and to the Body of Christ. Note that going to church does not make one a Christian just as much as being in a garage does not turn one into a car.
The majority race of Malaysia is the Malays and the official religion of Malaysia is Islam. In Malaysia, there is law that no one from other religions can evangelize to the Malays, including Christians. This law has led to Christians to being fearful of evangelizing to their fellow countrymen. We Malaysian Christians have indirectly proclaimed to the Malays that the message of salvation is not for them just because they are Muslim (Malays born in Malaysia are automatically Muslim from birth). For any Christian event, we put a clause in the bottom that says “For Non-Muslims” and yet ironically, it is at such gatherings that the people are called to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth! What hypocrisy! Is this what it means to be a Malaysian Christian?
Were not the apostles persecuted by the Sanhedrin when the Pharisees and Sadducees had warned the apostles not to speak the name of Jesus ever again? Did not the apostles defy the official command of the Sanhedrin and continued to preach even in the temple? Did they not suffer floggings for proclaiming the gospel and yet they rejoiced for being counted worthy for suffering for the gospel?
Why is the situation in Malaysia any different? People may say we should not get into trouble with the authorities because if we do, people would see Christians as troublemakers and Christianity in Malaysia will be jeopardized. On the contrary, I beg to differ. Were not the apostles branded as troublemakers yet their teaching continued to spread like wildfire? Christianity will not be jeopardized either in Malaysia, Afghanistan, Europe, China or whichever country. Quite the opposite, it is their earthly possessions that the institutional church is not willing to lose. If the church gets into trouble with authorities, our grand buildings, our expensive equipment and our self-gratifying activities are going to be lost. Nay, for the Malaysian church, this must not happen. Therefore, they will go to great lengths to preserve this even if it means keeping Malays out of Christian gatherings and disobeying the very command of God to share the gospel to them.
Am I saying the Malaysian Christians should go against the authorities? Yes, to a certain extent. We should obey the laws of the land as they are placed to preserve order in society. Nevertheless, if a law of the land stands in direct opposition to the command of God, the command of God takes the highest authority. There is without a doubt that there are Christians working with the majority race and bringing many to Christ at the risk of their own livelihood. These people should be commended for their courage and willingness to give up their own lives for the sake of the gospel. Note that Paul, when he was addressing to the Greeks in the Areopagus, he did not refer to the Mosaic Law and Old Testament prophecies as he did with the Jews. Likewise, we should present the gospel to our majority brethren in a way they can understand and accept.
What else does it mean to be a Malaysian Christian? As stated before, Malaysia is made of a myriad of races, cultures and traditions. Yet, we Malaysian Christians have become like Western Christians. We gobble up everything that comes from the West: music, Bible resources, theology, etc. This situation has made many people to think that Christianity is a ‘white man’s religion’! I have encountered people before that ask me something like this:
“Are you a Christian?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh? Is that why can’t speak Chinese?”
Here, I shamefully admit that I can’t speak any Chinese dialect fluently enough to carry a conversation. But that has nothing to do with me being a Christian. I am to blame as I did not take interest in learning the language when I was young. The point is that people associate Christianity with the West! How far can that be from the truth when Christianity came from the Middle East! Look at how much Malaysian Christians have imitated the ways of the West! Our instruments and our songs are exactly like the West and we try so hard to replicate even the style of playing!
What happened to the instruments of Malaysia? Where are the ‘kompangs’, ‘gu zhengs’, ‘er wu’, etc? If our musicians are so talented or ‘gifted’ (to use a Christian term) as they claim they are, cannot the songs be at least adapted to fit traditional instruments? Nay, they are talented/gifted for being able to replicate how Planetshakers or Hillsongs style of playing. Malaysian Christians, therefore, face a dilemma. How would they correct the misconception that Christianity is not just a ‘white man’s religion’ and yet continue to do what they are doing? As a realist, I admit that the Western culture has become too entrenched in Malaysia. Only really committed Christians can break this norm. Does this imply that being a Malaysian Christian means imitating the West?
To summarize, what does it mean to be a Malaysian Christian? Does it mean to be hypocritical and to imitate the West? I jolly well hope not. If it is not, then what does being a Malaysian Christian mean? In my opinion, the truths of Christianity cross over boundaries of race and culture. Even in Scripture, the Apostles did not force the Gentile believers to follow the Jewish style of worship nor were the details recorded in the New Testament. Rather, Paul exhorted and taught the churches to do things in an appropriate manner. It is my guess that probably the Gentile churches adapted the style of worship to their various cultures while maintaining the truths of the gospel and the teachings of the Apostles. Therefore, to be a Malaysian Christian means to be proud of our diverse cultures. Also, it means to be ready as a witness in a majority Islamic country even if it means persecution in any form.

Unpacking God’s Word
Message by Michael Gong
Notes compiled by Sarah Chen
The Bible
What use is a gift box left unopened?
Unpacking means opening the box, and finding the gift inside it. Just like the Bible.
3 Ways To Unpack The Bible
1. Learn some Jewish history and culture
- To know something, we gotta know the background first.
- Jonah 1:1-4 = Jonah ran away to Nineveh to "get away" from God, because if he didn't he afraid he might suffer at Nineveh.
- When we have more choices, God becomes only ONE of those choices.
- If we want the application, we must unpack it! Then the bible comes in, as reference.
- The more we do, the more chances we get to hear His voice.
2. Look up and look down!
- In short, read up the whole passage when we read the bible.
- Do not just pluck out verses out randomly, just because its related to a situation your facing at the moment.
- Verses come together, connected from top to bottom.
- By just plucking out one verse, the meaning could be totally different when it's put together with the verses before after it.
3. Irony
- Sometimes what we expect it not that we get.
- There are many things we have yet to know about.
- The book of Jonah shows some similarities of Jonah's situations and Jesus.
So in conclusion, the Bible is a gift to us, but many don't use it in full yet. One of the way to grow is through God's word.

MYF 2009 – The Game Plan
Vision: To Grow Spiritually, Individually and Collectively
Mission: Grow in Love, Faith and Purity
Theme: Through Word, Though and Deed
Verse: Ephesians 4:15-16
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
As the year goes by, we hope all of us will keep these statements in mind, not just as a cool tagline, but as a goal we all strive to. Everyone has a part to play – be it the members, the committee or the helpers. We all hope to look back when December comes by and proudly say that this year was different. That this year was one that in all circumstances made us grow.

Viewpoints: YLDP & BersatUnite
Once in a while, we are gonna have members share on this blog. It can be about anything from thoughts to recapping experiences on events and activities. This section is gonna be called “Viewpoints”
Sharing by Khong Mei Yan
Few months ago i attended the Youth Leadership Development Programme, also known as YLDP!, which is often tailed with a "Yeah man!" Anyway, the camp was great. What really struck me during camp was the prophecy that was revealed to us through Pastor Daniel and Uncle Robert about revival coming to Malaysia starting with the Methodist Youths!
Uncle Robert shared with us that during his time, they were waiting for this so called revival too, but “tak jadi” cause got lah stuff ang “terjadi”. But he continued to speak that we are a NEW generation. We are a Joshua generation! Called into the promise land! (go read up on it).
So during camp, God gave me Jeremiah 31 during my personal devotion time. I was disturbed by it throughout camp, not knowing what it means. So I came home and read up, and Jeremiah 31:31-34.
"The time is coming," declares the LORD,
"when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant
I made with their forefathers
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband to them,"
declares the LORD."This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after that time," declares the LORD.
"I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbour,
or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,'
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,"
declares the LORD.
"For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more."
Did some research on it. And God confirms that something is happening and WILL HAPPEN in Malaysia! I believe it! Do you? Then we had this BersatUnite Concert yesterday. And it was really good. The worship band, Juwita Suwito and hers, and the whole congregation made up of multiple church denominations were joining hands in prayer and worship! It was amazing!
This sharing is mainly to AWAKEN the youths out there who are still blur about what's going on in Malaysia. Recession is so out! Revival is IN! So lets join hands in prayer! God works through prayer.
Really really REALLY wan!!!! AMEN!
